The Northwest Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center (NW PA AHEC) provides a program entitled ARCH® (Adult Recruitment to Careers in Healthcare) that is designed to introduce health careers to adults who are non-traditional, second career or displaced workers. This program involves career exploration, job shadowing and mentoring techniques, all of which assist adults in matching their career goals and interests to a health career. Adult candidates for this program are recruited through referral by such organizations as the CareerLinks and public advertisements. Interested individuals attend an orientation program with a NW PA AHEC representative to discuss the many health career options and advancement opportunities. Also involved in the program are local healthcare employers and regional educational facilities offering healthcare career curriculums. Employers and education representatives discuss at the orientation program career options through training programs and availability of jobs locally. After familiarizing themselves with health careers, the individual can narrow their interest to the health careers they are interested in possibly pursuing. The NW PA AHEC coordinates with the area healthcare facilities to schedule job shadowing experiences. Upon completion of their job shadowing experiences the participant receives guidance from the NW PA AHEC that includes assistance in finding the appropriate training providers and/or on the job training, as well as being a consistent health career resource throughout their career and/or education. Program Objectives: 1. Introduce health careers to adults • Match career goals with interests • Provide job shadow experience • Offer guidance 2. Give employers opportunity to express desired qualities in an employee 3. Give educational/training facilities opportunity to discuss ways to obtain training & financial assistance
