The cornerstone of the mission of the PA AHEC is the recruitment, distribution, and retention of a high quality health professions workforce for the Commonwealth. Promoting the NHSC (National Health Service Corps) and State Loan Repayment and Scholarship programs are important first steps to introducing providers to Pennsylvania. Developing and implementing math, science and English programs for students in disadvantaged school districts facilitates entrance into health careers through a “Grow Your Own” approach to the health professions crisis. This Health Careers Opportunity Programming (HCOP) provides information and role models to encourage students to choose a career in health care.
In addition to the HCOP activities, the AHEC promotes and facilitates student participation in the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Health Care. It also supports activities including career camps, job shadowing, attendance at career days and other functions at academic institutions.
To further the career exploration process, contact the NW PA AHEC office or talk to school guidance counselors for more information. The AHEC may be able to set up shadowing experiences, connect students with other helpful resources, health care professionals, or colleges, or provide students with more information on the AHEC health career camps!
